I wish my idols would keep their mouths shut and their opinions to themselves and stop backing my political enemies.
I know. That sounded totally self absorbed and really pathetic coming from a girl in the middle of Tennessee whose brushes with fame are few and fleeting, but seriously. I have been to see Elton John in concert 13 times. That's a lot of money over 30 some odd years. I was really proud to go see him when he was donating all the proceeds to AIDs research and his AIDs foundation. But really. To step out now. Almost 4 years after Ronald Reagan's death and say that Reagan didn't do enough for AIDs is really ignorant. It isn't just Elton either. George Michael is on the bandwagon and I'm sure lots of other Brit and American rockers are on board also. That's just stupid and ignorant.
What did they want Reagan to do? The only really responsible thing that Reagan could have done in that day and age, and that would have fallen under his job description would have been to quarantine people. How do you think that whole community would have reacted to that? In the 80's (oh how I lament those happy days gone by) there was no information about this disease. There were no studies, there was nothing but scores of gay men and other unfortunate people who were infected dying rapidly and horrifically. Everybody knows that if you want progress, keep it as far away from the government as possible. That's how Reagan thought, and it's true. The advances in drug therapy have come from the private sector, not government research.
That's just one of the things Elton has done that has been an affront to me, a devoted fan. He also stood on stage with Hillary Clinton and publicly endorsed her. He called everybody not voting for her "misogynists". I can tell you right now that I am not a misogynist. I don't like liberals. Most liberals are women. I don't like those women, but if you put up a conservative woman against Hillary, I'd probably vote for her. I was a big fan of Margaret Thatcher. I don't think Elton or his bunch were big fans of Maggie's... does that make him a misogynist?
Throwing around these words is ridiculous. Racist, Misogynist, Sexist...they have lost their true meaning because they are so over used in the incorrect manner. If you ask those people who throw those words around if they can define those words, you usually get some mish-mash of public school, politically correct mumbo jumbo. (and their definition makes about as much sense as that last sentence)
Elvis Costello, a Brit, played Hillary's 60th birthday party back in October and Elton has endorsed her. Don't these Brits realize that A) they aren't allowed to vote in this election and so their opinion doesn't mean squat, or B)The opinion of a Brit in US election has never mattered. and C) It is illegal for candidates to take foreign money to fund election, although the Clinton's are famous for it. Elton's "concert" asked for donation for Hillary to be between $125 and $2300 bucks. She raised 2.5 million that night. Elton may not have contributed personally, but he was the focus of the event, and it would have been his paycheck, so... Not to mention that Hillary slipped in the little gem, saying that she's "here for the Irish". What does their vote matter? Their opinions haven't mattered since July 3, 1776.
