Cool New Site

Ian Sutherland — Fri, 03/06/2009 - 16:43

Just ran across a site- despite it's name, it's not about the coming Robot apocalypse, but www.Republibot.com is a nifty site from which to view the culture wars. Mostly Science Fiction, but with a refreshing twist of conservatism

Go look!

I'm getting emotional over the Robot Wars

Ian Sutherland — Wed, 08/06/2008 - 19:00

In this alarming video, a sock puppet 'bot (Hm. I think they have those on IO9.com) emotes and is recognized by a SpiderBot. I think the jury is out on "emotional intelligence interfaces".... or it should be out, running for the hills! Watch the vid. See if it doesn't give you a cold shiver...

TESLA ROX!

Ian Sutherland — Tue, 08/05/2008 - 20:03

It's been said that I'm not a fan of Electronic Music. Well, I am ....you just have to bash enough electrons together. Major Kudos to those who are making dangerous, heart stopping music again! This was done with NO AMPs! Okay, no amplifiers. Plenty of Amps (although not as many as you might think....I=VxR, after all... ) The sound you hear is the sound of the Tesla coils, controlled by computers.  Read more »

It may be time for the pendulum to swing back a ways...

Ian Sutherland — Fri, 07/25/2008 - 23:07

I love Batman. I loved The Dark Knight. But I think that it may be time for Batman to be FUN again- so I'm looking forward to this interpretation of a Not-So-Dark-Knight.

Why So Serious, Indeed!

If I were any good at writing Obits....

Ian Sutherland — Mon, 06/30/2008 - 08:16

Yes, I know I'm a couple of weeks late to this party, but it took me a bit to sort it out. We're gonna miss George Carlin- the man was frequently a bitter pill to swallow, but usually he was needed medicine. He'd challenge your beliefs, make you laugh and make you think.

Because we all dream of strapping four jet engines to our backs...

Ian Sutherland — Thu, 05/15/2008 - 00:26

This gentleman, known by the delicate nom de guerre of FusionMan, is living the dream. By strapping a wing to his back, he defies gravity and man's natural and well-founded fear of becoming street pizza through the use of insane amounts of thrust.

In my younger days, I'd envy him. Now I just kind of shake my head.

More intel from the Robot Wars

Ian Sutherland — Thu, 05/01/2008 - 09:54

Well, combined with the canidroid a few weeks ago, we now see robots that can reassemble themselves... Things don't look good for the human race.  Read more »

Expelled!- Go See it.... NOW!

Ian Sutherland — Fri, 04/18/2008 - 13:46

A quick mini review- The Mad Bikini Blogger and I just got back from seeing Ben Stein's documentary Expelled:No Intelligence Allowed, about the suppression of Intelligent Design in Academia. In short, no matter which side of the argument you are on, you will learn something. Go See It NOW!  Read more »

Pulpy Gray Matter of the Day

Ian Sutherland — Fri, 04/18/2008 - 06:17

In my not-so-humble opinion, this is what Pulpy Gray Matter is all about... Take a look at an unlikely corporate shill in this nifty bit of retro-futurism...

Light It Up Night tonight!

Ian Sutherland — Sat, 03/29/2008 - 13:07

Tonight is Light it Up Night, where we celebrate the role of progress over the tyranny of Nature. Take a moment and reflect over how rotten life was just a couple of centuries ago, when disease and grime were rampant; when the choice of working even ten miles away from your home wasn't available; when goods and services were limited and expensive. Think of a time without ready supplies of information at your fingertips, when food preparation was time consuming and fraught with the peril of food-borne illnesses.

When there were good odds that your children would die before they were teenagers.

So in honor of the great progress that we have made in the last two hundred years, Light Up! everything in your home! Go for a drive in your SUV! Rejoice in your own personal power- power that would be the envy of kings just a scant couple of centuries ago.....

Tonight is Light It Up Night! Celebrate! Read more »
